New baseball rules will evolve, Torre says

PHOENIX • While baseball continues to wrestle with the specific language and nuances of the provisions meant to protect catchers from collisions at home plate, executive Joe Torre said Wednesday that the experimental rule in place for 2014 did have the effect sought by its many advocates. “The one thing that we set out to accomplish we have accomplished,” said Torre, the Hall of Fame manager. “We didn’t carry anybody off the field.” Torre, Major League Baseball’s executive vice president, outlined some of the changes that baseball is considering for two of its game-changing moves from the past season.
